Brown is having a real fashion moment this season, and in my opinion, it’s even more chic than black.

It offers the sophistication often associated with black but with so much more elegance. It’s the perfect alternative for those who prefer richer, earthier tones—and it doesn’t have to feel dull or be reserved for accessories!
Continuing my mission to inspire your wardrobe, brown is my focus in the latest instalment of the ‘How to Wear Colour’ series.

Versions of brown
Like beige (covered in September), brown comes in many shades, so there’s usually one to suit you. It’s softer than black, making it a great alternative for most people.
Many tones, like chocolate and coffee, lean warm with a yellow undertone. If you need a cooler brown, pewter or mushroom shades contain more grey and are more flattering for cooler skin tones.
Tips on wearing brown
Brown is surprisingly versatile, especially if you usually reach for black or navy. A jumper, skirt, or tailored trousers can act as a neutral base for your outfit—plenty of options this autumn!
It pairs beautifully with other neutrals like creams and beiges, but also works with colour. Try lavender, sky blue, pinks, sage, or apricot. For bolder choices, teal, aqua, and red are equally as good.
Hair colour: Broadly speaking, the darker your hair, the easier it is to wear brown as a stand-alone colour. If you’re finding that it washes you out, pair it with another colour to lift it.
Mix textures: Pair a chunky brown knit with smooth leather boots or trousers. Combining your fabrics can make your outfit look more modern and interesting.
Placement: If it feels draining when worn close to your face, opt for it on your bottom half.
How I wear brown

My set of swatches
Brown isn’t a colour I have much of in my wardrobe, as it feels heavy to me. Until now, it was mainly reserved for boots!
Chocolate brown and rose brown suit me well, but noticing a gap, and inspired by this season’s looks, I picked up a more wearable pewter brown jumper and a rose brown top this season. The jumper has quickly become a go-to casual piece, worn simply with denim or burgundy leggings as the weather starts to cool.

Your best browns
Warmer complexions suit more yellow based, camel and coffee-like tones, whilst cooler tones are best with grey and taupe toned shades like pewter. If you struggle to wear browns in your makeup, it’s worth checking your colouring type.
Your personality and style matter – they go hand in hand. Pair brown with colours you love, compare to your swatches, and pick shades that make your complexion glow.
Brown may seem basic, but worn with the right shades, it can play a stylish part of your wardrobe.
